About The Materials
Basalt is an igneous rock formed when volcanic lava cools rapidly on the earth’s surface. The rapid cooling creates the fine grain and dark grey to black color typically found in basalt stone. Similar to granite, basalt is extremely durable and requires no maintenance. The basalt stone used to build the Nan Madol, an ancient 13th century religious complex, remains to this day attesting to the durability and acute longevity of basalt stone.
About The Design
Designed to be as natural as possible, the Basalt Rock Bench contains no carvings or polished surfaces. The legs of the bench are made from columnar basalt that is sawn level at the top and base. The seat of the Basalt Rock Bench is also columnar basalt and features a flame finish top with chiselededges. The natural design of the Basalt Rock Bench is a great compliment to any lawn or park setting and is sure to be enjoyed for many years.
About The Finish
The Flame Finish process involves super-heating the surface of the basalt to nearly 3,500 degrees thereby causing rapid expansion of the stone. The rapid expansion causes pieces of the stone to flake off thereby exposing a textured surface that resembles natural weathering. The flame finish on the seat of our Basalt Rock Bench compliments the chiseled edges for an overall look of natural completion.
The Chiseled edges are created by breaking the stone with a hammer and chisel. This process provides a very rough surface or a slightly irregular finish. The chiseled finish adds to the natural look of the Basalt Rock Bench.
